Wealth and success — we seem obsessed with both — but what are they exactly? We could talk about the definition in the dictionary, but that isn’t what I want to know. I am talking about the metrics, the steps to, the point of completion….
The metrics depend on the individual, and the events that have, and will, unfold throughout one’s life. I imagine those as varied as land, personal connections, health, and accomplishments in one’s field(s) of pursuit can count as wealth, and attainment on a level previously unattained, success. However, today’s definitions of wealth and success falsely equate money and attention. And we should not include one’s appearance in either category, as we have limited control over it. The takeaway being that we must each choose what metrics matter to us, and that all have a place in the world.
The steps are therefore dependent on the metric(s) that one pursues. Equally so, if not more, on the situations one finds themselves in on the journey. I think it is in the steps where money and attention can certainly play a role, but I would still not say they are ever wealth or success on their own. What I find particularly frustrating is the realization that those who came before can only guide so much, because of the changing tools and attitudes. I believe the takeaway is therefore to remain mindful of one’s position in life and remain focused on chosen metrics, not imposed ones.
There are still some points worthy of consideration regarding the point of completion. It is important to choose this point when starting because as one progress toward the goal it can feel as if nothing is changing when it truly is, and so we move the goal further, never feeling that we accomplish anything when really we have far surpassed the original goal. Also, take time to recognize and appreciate your accomplishments; there’s always more to strive for, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate our successes. In the converse, don’t celebrate every step. It can detract from the feeling our major accomplishments should give.
This all leads to a few major takeaways. First, throughout the process, be respectful and mindful of yourself and position in life. Second, no one has or will walk the exact path you have for the exact reasons you do, so take advice from those who can give it, but also respect your inner voice. You need to trust yourself and be open to learning; even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll still grow as a person.
